I wrote Backlash not long after our drummer, Mick, joined the band in 2019. I knew these grooves would suit his style of playing well.

Backlash has two main sections. The first is a dub style groove with synth and horn lines. I tried to make the synth sound like an instrument I had heard in Dabke music called the "houran". The second section is inspired by Grime. I love how slinky and intense the beats are in this style. Harmonically it's very open for the soloists to take it wherever they want to go and Julian and Rob carve it up!
